The Other House
The Other House was constructed in 2014 and forms a separate annex to our home in Borrisdale, with its own private access, parking and outside seating area.
Design of the building was inspired by the “Department” Croft House of the early 20th century, incorporating traditional wet dash rendered gables and a sheeted roof, but updated to utilise the latest techniques in sustainable construction and renewables. The development was recognised in the 2016 Outer Hebrides Design Awards for the Best Self Designed New Build property.
The interior comprises a spacious vaulted living area with a fully glazed seaward elevation to make the most of our stunning views over the Sound. A modern log burning stove makes for cozy evenings. There’s an adjoining, well equipped kitchen/dining area with breakfast bar.
Situated on the northern side of the property, the bedroom provides a contrasting calm and restful feel.
Ensuite facilities feature a combined Japanese style tub and rain shower.
We generate a sizable proportion of the electricity used in the development by means of two 4 kWp solar PV arrays and hot water is provided by a solar thermal system.
For those with an appreciation of textile design, we produce Harris Tweed on site and are always happy to demonstrate the process of weaving on our loom.
Accessability note – please note that the shower in The Other House is over the bath and there is also a step of about 150mm in the bathroom. Please contact us if more information is required.
